China Unicom to launch 3G services in MayPublished: 13 Jan 2009 00:00:00 PST
Jan. 13, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd<600050><762><CHU> will launch the 3G services on May 17, sources reported, citing industry insiders as saying.
China Unicom, which has obtained the license to provide 3G services based on wideband code division multiple access technology (WCDMA), will complete the bidding process for suppliers of WCDMA equipment by January, and the network construction is expected to start from February.
China Unicom's existing 2G users can use the 3G services directly without changing the numbers, while new 3G numbers starting with 185 and 186 will be issued on May 17.
The Chinese telecom operator has already launched trial 3G services in seven cities, and it plans to invest RMB 100 billion in WCDMA network construction within two years.
